Private George Henry Reilly

George Henry Reilly was born on 9 November 1892 at Cornaglare, Drum, County Monaghan, the second of eight children of farmer William Reilly and his wife Margaret (nee Pickens). By 1911 he was living on the family farm with his parents and six surviving siblings.

Reilly enlisted in the North Irish Horse between 7 September and 21 October 1912 (No.737 – later Corps of Hussars No.71087). He embarked for France with A Squadron on 17 August 1914, seeing action on the retreat form Mons and advance to the Aisne.

Reilly remained with the regiment throughout the war. On 10 February 1919 he was transferred to Class Z, Army Reserve.

After the war he returned to farming at Cornaglare. He married farmer's daughter Margaret Jane Stewart at Drum on 24 October 1934. Later in life the couple moved with their children to London.
